Assessment of hip abduction strength (gluteus medius).

Strength

Purpose

Screen for Hip Abduction Strength findings.

Execution

  1. 1Lie on the side with the test leg on top
  2. 2Keep the pelvis stacked and knee straight
  3. 3Abduct the top leg against manual resistance
  4. 4Hold 3-5 seconds while resisting
  5. 5Compare left vs right

  1. 1Observe from: lateral.
  2. 2Standardize start position and instructions.
  3. 3Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
  4. 4Record key observations and any positive indicators.
  5. 5Compare left vs right when applicable.
