Scapular Assistance Test (SAT)

Purpose

Screen for Scapular Assistance findings.

Execution

1. 1Have the client elevate the arm in the scapular plane
2. 2Manually assist scapular upward rotation and posterior tilt
3. 3Repeat the arm elevation with assistance
4. 4Note changes in pain or range
5. 5Compare to the unassisted movement

Key Observations

• Pain improvement with assistance indicates a positive test
• Suggests a scapular component

Protocol

1. 1Observe from: lateral.
2. 2Standardize start position and instructions.
3. 3Perform 2-3 trials per side when applicable.
4. 4Record key observations and any positive indicators.
5. 5Compare left vs right when applicable.
